1.1.1.1 What is it?

1.1.1.1  is a public DNS resolver operated by Cloudflare that provides a fast and private way of browsing the Internet. Unlike most DNS resolvers, 1.1.1.1 doesn’t sell user data to advertisers. Additionally, 1.1.1.1 has been rated as the fastest DNS resolver out there.

What is DNS?

The Domain Name Systems (DNS) are the directory of the Internet. While humans access information online through domains like example.com, computers do so by using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses – unique alphanumeric strings of characters assigned to them. all Internet properties. DNS translates domain names into IP addresses so users can access a website easily without having to know the website’s IP address.

What is DNS resolver?

A DNS resolver is a type of server that manages a “name to address” translation, where the IP address is matched against the domain name and sent back to the requested computer. DNS resolver is also known as recursive resolver.

The computer is configured to talk to specific DNS resolvers identified by an IP address. Typically, configuration is managed by the user’s Internet Service Provider (ISP) over home or wireless connections and by the network administrator on office connections. Users can also manually change the DNS resolver their computers talk to.

Why use 1.1.1.1 instead of the ISP’s resolver?

The main reasons to switch to a third-party DNS resolver are for improved security and faster performance.

In terms of security, ISPs don’t always use strong encryption on their DNS or support the DNSSEC security protocol, making their DNS queries vulnerable to data breaches and user-facing. with threats like online attacks. In addition, ISPs often use DNS records to track user activity and behavior.

In terms of performance, the ISP’s DNS resolver can be slow and can be overwhelmed by heavy usage. If there is enough traffic on the network, the ISP’s resolver may stop responding to the requests altogether. In some cases, the attackers intentionally overload the ISP’s recursion, leading to denial of service.

What makes 1.1.1.1 more secure than other public DNS services?

Many DNS services support DNSSEC. Although this is a good security method, it does not protect user queries from the DNS companies themselves. Many of these companies collect data from their DNS customers for commercial use, such as selling to advertisers.

In contrast, 1.1.1.1 does not mine user data. Logs are kept for 24 hours for debugging purposes, after which they are deleted.

1.1.1.1 also provides security features not available from many other public DNS services, such as query name minimization. Minimizing query names improves privacy by including only the minimum amount of information needed for that step in the resolution process per query.

What makes 1.1.1.1 the fastest recursive DNS service?

The power of the Cloudflare network gives 1.1.1.1 a natural advantage in delivering fast DNS queries. Since it is integrated into Cloudflare’s network, spanning 200 global cities, users anywhere in the world get a quick response from 1.1.1.1.

In addition, the data centers in the network have access to about 25 million Internet properties on the Cloudflare platform, making queries for those domains lightning fast. Overall, the DNSPerf independent DNS tracker ranks 1.1.1.1 as the fastest DNS service in the world:

What is Cloudflare WARP?

WARP is an optional application built on top of 1.1.1.1. WARP creates a secure connection between personal devices (such as computers and smartphones) and the services you access over the Internet. While 1.1.1.1 secures only DNS queries, WARP secures all traffic coming from your device.

WARP does this by routing your traffic over the Cloudflare network instead of the public Internet. Cloudflare automatically encrypts all traffic and can often be accelerated by routing it over Cloudflare’s low latency paths. In this way, WARP provides some of the security benefits of a virtual public network (VPN) service without the performance penalties and data privacy concerns that many for-profit VPNs bring.

How to use 1.1.1.1 and WARP?

1.1.1.1 is completely free. Setting it up on the desktop takes a few minutes and requires no special technical or software skills. Users can simply open their computer’s Internet preferences and replace the IP address of the existing DNS service with the 1.1.1.1 address. Instructions for the different desktop operating systems are available here  .
